New Work

I finally dug my way into the sewing room and got to work over the weekend. And as is usually the case, just getting to work, was the key to solving some problems that I've been encountering.

I have been working with image transfer: specifically with disperse dyes and with direct transfer of digital images to fabric. I have loved the images. But each time I began to machine quilt, the hard lines of the quilting destroyed the soft edges of the "painterly" images.

Map.1
This piece was from our group's challenge a few weeks ago
and based on a digital image from BJ Parady. The image was
manipulated in Photoshop Elements, then printed on
silk and machine quilted.

I had done some "seed stitching" on a piece last year and was pleased with the results. So when friend Sarah suggested some seed stitching on a totally different piece of hand made felt, my memory was triggered.

Disperse 07.1
Disperse dyes were painted on paper then heat transfered to
a polyester crepe. Quilted using seed stitches.

This form of hand stitching has been just the ticket for quilting these transferred images in a way that maintains the diffuse edges. I'm very pleased.
